Jacqueline Fernandez grew up in Bahrain, Manama. She is Sri Lankan and comes from an ethnically diverse background. Her parents are Malaysian and from Sri Lanka. Their father Elroy Fernandez is from Sri Lanka. There are two brothers younger than her as well as an older sister. Her family was born and raised in Bahrain. Her parents had been to the country in the 1980s due to the civil war in Sri Lanka. When she finished her studies in Bahrain her family was granted a Scholarship to attend the University of Sydney, where she earned a diploma of Media and Communications in Sydney, Australia. Having a passion for the world of languages and cultures, she took part in the Berlitz school of languages, in which she was able to learn Spanish as well as improve her French and Arabic. In 2006 she was named the Miss Sri Lanka for Miss Universe 2006 in March 2006, and was also a contestant in Miss Universe 2006. Following her 2006 Miss Sri Lanka win, Padukone stepped into the world of television and hosted a show about Sri Lankan businesses called Lanka Business Report. Padukone is the child of and badminton champion Prakash Padukone. Padukone grew as a child in Bangalore, but she was born in Copenhagen. When she was a teenager she was a badminton player in national level championships but left her career in the sport in order to be a fashion model. Padukone is a native of Mangalorean roots and speaks Konkani as her primary language. Padukone is located within the Kundapura Taluk of Karnataka's Udupi District. Her father, Prakash Padukone, is an international badminton champion who is retired. Her mom is a traveling agent.
